Chinese Style Masala Idli Fry /Masala Idli In Soya Sauce

Chinese style masala idli fry

Tossed in soy sauce with some Indian spices and herbs these masala idlis are flavourful and delicious in taste. I usually made this recipe for breakfast or evening snacks when I have some leftover idlis from lunch or dinner. Adding sauces and veggies give the leftover idlis a new taste and flavour.

It is a simple and quick recipe to prepare and do not need any expertise. You can also customize it according to your taste. Serve with coconut peanut chutney or Coriander-Mint Chutney to make them more flavourful. Please check my other snacks recipe

Ingredients used in the making of Chinese style masala idli fry

Idlis – I have used leftover fermented rice and urad dal idli for this recipe. Leftover idlis are best for this recipe as they become slightly hard and do not stick and break while cooking. You can also use suji idli, poha idli, oats idli, dal idli to make this masala idli recipe.

Fresh veggies – I added onion, capsicum, and sweet corn, but other vegetables like green beans, coloured capsicum, carrots can also be added, according to your preference. You can also add paneer or sprouts to make them more healthy.

Refined oil– physically refined rice bran oil is used in this recipe. It gives a rich taste and makes them crispy.

Soy sauce – provides a tangy taste and little dark colour.

Tomato sauce– Gives a sweet taste along with the tangy flavour of soy sauce.

Red chilli sauce– enhances the spicy flavour of the masala idlis.

Spices and herbs– Gives unique flavour and enhances the taste of the masala idlis.

Tips and tricks

  1. Bring the refrigerated idlis to room temperature otherwise they stay hard and not absorbed the flavours nicely. You can also sprinkle little water on them and microwave them for few seconds.
  2. Increase or decrease  the quanity of sauce according to your taste and preferences.
  3. Serve warm otherwise they become hard after cooling down.
  4. You can also try to use pavbhaji masala, maggi masala, chana masala to give them a fusion taste.
