About Raw banana masala fry Recipe
Raw banana fry is a popular South Indian dish that is prepared with green banana and served as a side with rice and dal or as snacks with sambhar or chutney. Bananas are found in abundance in the southern part of India and are used very often in the making of everyday recipes.
Traditional banana fries are deep-fried and then served but here, I am sharing with you a unique and quick method of preparing raw banana fry. They are not deep-fried but tasty as well as health-friendly.

For making this first, we need to boil the raw or green bananas and then roast them in a small quantity of oil and spices. We can cut them into any shape either round or long. Serve warm this tasty and nutritious snack with green chutney or tomato sauce.

Main ingredients used in the preparation of raw banana masala fry
Raw Banana: choose fresh, green unripe firm raw banana to get the best taste and flavour.
Spices: it is mildly spiced recipe where we used our everyday spices such as red mustard seeds, haldi, salt, coriander powder, hing, jeera powder, amchoor powder and garam masala.
Oil: Any type of cooking oil can be used in shallow frying but I have used mustard oil which gives a unique aroma and taste to this recipe.

- Raw or green banana is rich in Vitamin C and Vitamin B6 which are essential for boosting immunity and good for skin health.
- They are low in glycemic index and have a high content of resistant starch which reduces sugar spikes. That’s why it is beneficial for diabetic people.
- Also rich in fibre keeping constipation at a bay. It helps in reducing cholesterol so good for heart health.
- Due to high fibre content, their digestion is slow and they give you a feeling of fullness for a long time. That helps in reducing weight loss.
Step-by-step preparation of raw banana fries(Aratikaya fry)
1.Wash raw banana and cut little from the ends. Transfer to a pressure cooker filled with little water, pressure cook them upto 3 whistles.
2. Once the pressure is released, strain water and let them cool completely.
3. Remove the peel and cut into ½ cm thick pieces. Keep them aside.
4. Now heat oil in a pan, add red mustard seeds. Once they start crackling, add heeng, coriander powder, turmeric powder, roasted cumin seeds powder, dry mango powder, black pepper power, salt, green chillies and few curry leaves. Mix and roast them for few seconds.
5. Now add bananas pieces and gently mix them so that masala coats on every piece. Cook for 2-3 minutes on low flame. Stir in between.
6. Switch off the flame. Transfer to a serving plate, garnish with til seeds and serve warm with green chutney.
7. Serve it as a snack with green chutney or tomato ketchup. You can make it as dry veg and serve it as a side with rice and dal, rice and sambhar, curd rice, or tomato rice.
How to make it for fasting time
If you are making this raw banana masala fry for fasting, use refine oil or ghee instead of mustard oil. Skip rai, heeng,coriander powder, turmeric powder, and white salt. Make a tadka with cumin seeds and use rock salt for taste.
Serving Suggestion
Serve this crispy and spicy kachha kela fry with green chutney or tomato ketchup as a evening time snack, or at mid-morning or even as a fasting snack.
Tips and tricks
- Use firm green bananas to make this recipe.
- Increase the spiciness according to your taste and preference.
- You can also add onion or ginger garlic paste to make it a dry veg and serve it with rice and dal as a side.
- Banana is allowed to eat during fasting. So, it is a perfect recipe for any fasting time that gives you satiety for a longer time.
- For making it for vrat or upwas, you can use ghee instead of mustard oil and skip red mustard seeds, heeng, turmeric, and coriander powder.

Ingredients
- 2 raw banana (300 gm)
- 1 tbsp mustard oil
- ½ tsp red mustard seeds
- 1 pinch heeng
- ½ tsp coriander powder
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- ½ tsp cumin seeds powder
- ½ tsp dry mango powder
- ¼ tsp black pepper powder
- ¾ tsp salt
- 2 green chilles cut into half
- Few curry leaves
- 1 tsp til seeds for garnishing
Instructions
- Wash, cut little from ends. Pressure cook it upto 3 whistles.
- Once the pressure is released, strain water and let them cool completely.
- Npw cut into ½ cm thick pieces.
- Heat oil in a pan, add re mustard seeds. Once they start craclkkle add heeng, coriander powder, cumin seeds powder, turmeric powder, salt, green chillies and few curry leaves. Mix and cook for few seconds.
- Now add banans pieces and gentlt mix them with masal. Cook for 2-3 minutes. Stir inbetween.
- Finally add garam masala and dry mango powder and mix well. Cook for another 1-2 minutes.
- Transfer to a serving plate, garnish with til seeds and serve warm.
