Falahari or Phalahari coconut peanut chutney is an Indian condiment that can be consumed during fasting time or vrat like Navratri, Ekadashi, Shivratri and others. Vrat ki chutney or falahari chutney is made without using onion, garlic and regular salt.

Today, I am sharing a quick satvik chutney recipe(without onion and garlic) for vrat that needs simple ingredients easily available at home.
In India during festivals like Navratri, people keep fast for a longer period and stay on a phalahari diet. Where ‘Phal’ is fruits and ‘ ahhar’ is diet, which means a diet with contains only fruits and non-grain cereals.
During fasting or vrat People mostly eat only fruits, selected vegetables, nuts, seeds and dairy products.

I am making this with zero fat so didn’t add the seasoning to the chutney. But if you like you can add seasoning with cumin seeds and curry leaves.
The main Ingredients used in the making of coconut peanut chutney
Coconut – fresh coconut is used here which gives the best flavour but if it is not available can add dry coconut or coconut powder instead. Add a little more water if using dry coconut.
Peanuts – roast raw peanuts first and remove their skin then add to the grinder jar. It helps in making the texture thick and creamy. Also, imparts a nice nutty flavour to the chutney.
Yoghurt – fresh curd is added which balance out the sweetness of coconut and spicy flavour of green chilli. If you don’t want add curd can replace it with water or lemon juice.
Green chilli- gives a spicy flavour and increases the taste of chutney.
Green coriander leaves– Few sprigs of coriander leaves are also added. It gives a nice colour and aroma to the chutney. You can skip it if you want.
Step by step preparation of fresh coconut chutney
1.In a grinder jar, add fresh coconut, roasted peanuts without skin, a few springs of coriander leaves, curd, sendha namak, green chilli, and cumin seeds. Grind it for a few seconds till it changes into a thick paste.
2. Now add ¼ cup water and grind it again till it changes into a smooth paste.
3. Vrat wali coconut chutney is ready to serve.
4. You can store it in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
Serving suggestion
It is an ideal chutney recipe to consume on any vrat. Enjoy it with your vrat meal.
Tips and tricks
- Use fresh coconut for the best taste but if it is not available, dry coconut can also be used in the same quantity. Then you may need to add a little more water to grind.
- You can skip green coriander leaves if don’t want but the addition of it really enhances the flavour.
- First, grind the chutney without adding water. If we add water at first, coconut pieces will not grind properly.
- Store it in the refrigerator, and use it within 3-4 days as we have used curd to make this.

- 35 gm fresh grated or chopped coconut
- 25 gm roasted peanut without skin
- 10 gm green coriander leaves
- 2 green chilli
- ¼ tsp sendha namak
