This simple and delicious homemade chocolate sauce made with cocoa powder is smooth, shiny, and very chocolaty in taste better than any chocolate sauce bought from the market.
This recipe needs only a few ingredients that are readily available at home and ready in 15 minutes. This chocolate sauce is gluten-free, low sugar, and low fat.
Homemade chocolate sauce is an easy one-bowl recipe that does not require any expertise. Just mix milk, cocoa powder, sugar, chocolate, cornflour and cook them till it starts thicken, then let it cool . Use immediately or store it for later use. It is mildly sweet, smooth textured, and gives a rich flavor of chocolate.
To make this homemade chocolate sauce made with cocoa powder, I have used Hershey’s cocoa powder, Morde’s chocolate, Amul’s toned milk, Amul milk powder, and Brown & Polson cornflour. You can try other brands available in the market or of your choice but, sometimes the taste may differ. In this recipe, I have used raw sugar it can also be replaced with jaggery, and there will be no difference in the taste.

How to use this chocolate sauce made with cocoa powder
- Add into milk to make chocolate milkshake.
- Warm and drizzle over the icecreams.
- Used as a topping for pancakes
- Add in the layers of truffle to give a chocolatey touch.
- For garnishing cookies, brownies, cakes.
- Add into the chocolate cake batter to give it an intense chocolate color and flavor.
- Use as a dip for fresh fruits.
- Add some dry fruit or dry berries and use as a spread for breads, ladi pav or bagels.
How to give flavour to the chocolate sauce
- Add some orange zest and juice to give an orange flavor.
- To make it mocha chocolate sauce add 1 tsp instant coffee to it.
- Add some fresh mint leaves to give a minty chocolate flavor.
Step by step preparation of homemade chocolate sauce
1. In a saucepan, add milk, raw sugar, cornflour, milk powder, salt, and dark cocoa powder. Now mix them with the help of a hand whisk until the mixture becomes lump-free.
2. Now put the saucepan on low flame, stir continuously and start cooking. After that, add chopped chocolate and again stir continuously till the mixture becomes slightly thick.
3. At this point, switch off the gas and let the mixture cool down completely.
4. After it cools down, stir well till it becomes smooth and shiny. If you feel any lumps in the mixture, then blend it for 30 seconds in a mixer jar and then strain it.
5. Chocolate sauce is ready to use. Use immediately or transfer the chocolate sauce in a clean and sterilized jar and put it in the refrigerator for later use when required. It stays fresh for up to 2 weeks in the fridge.

Tips and tricks
- Milk should be at room temperature when all the ingredients are added and mixed in it.
- Keep the flame on low flame during the cooking of the chocolate sauce.
- In place of raw sugar, jaggery can be used, without altering any difference in the taste.
- After cooling down, if there are lumps in the mixture, blend it in the mixer jar for a few seconds and then strain it to give a smooth and shiny texture.
- Put the chocolate sauce in the refrigerator to keep it fresh for a longer time.
- Chocolate sauce can be used for up to 2 weeks when stored properly in the fridge.
