A pancake is a flat cake traditionally made with all-purpose flour, eggs, milk, butter, and sugar. Baking powder or baking soda is used as a leavener.
About jowar and oats pancake
Generally, we used starch-based flour to make pancakes like all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, etc. But today, in this post, I am sharing a gluten-free pancake recipe using jowar(sorghum) and oats flour. It is a healthy and tasty pancake recipe ready within 15 minutes.
Jowar which is also called sorghum in English is a gluten-free whole grain. Globally it is known as the “new quinoa”. Due to its numerous health benefits, it is now a staple food in most households in India.

We can use the whole jowar for making khichdi, dosa, upma, kheer etc. Jowar flour is mostly used for making instant dosa, chilla, idli, roti, etc.
This pancake is super easy to make and needs only a few ingredients that are easily available at home. Jowar is a famous millet that we use very frequently now for our daily preparation. As you know, millets are very healthy and satisfying and keep you full for a longer duration.
These eggless jowar and oats pancake have a light and soft texture. Cook pancakes on a low medium flame so that they will cook nicely from inside too.
Serve this pancake warm with maple syrup or honey. You can also add some fresh fruits to enhance the taste and nutrition, and make it more filling.

Ingredients required to make jowar and oats pancake
Flour- jowar or sorghum and oats flour are used to make these gluten-free pancakes. I have used readymade jowar flour and ground quick oats to make its flour.
Milk- low-fat milk is used that is enriched in nutrition but low in fat content.
Sweetener- jaggery powder is added to give a mildly sweet taste to these pancakes. You can also add maple syrup, honey, and coconut sugar instead of jaggery as per availability.
Coconut powder– gives light texture and improves taste.
Oil– sunflower oil is added. Any other refined oil, ghee or coconut oil can also be used.
Flaxseed powder- instead of eggs, we used flax meal to make the pancake fluffy and light. It also gives a nutty taste to the pancake.
Baking powder– helps in getting light-textured pancakes.
Cinnamon powder– gives a nice flavour and aroma.
Health benefits of oats and jowar
- Jowar or sorghum is a gluten-free whole grain and is now considered an excellent alternative for people who are sensitive to ‘gluten’.
- A good source of fibre which lowers the risk of stroke, cholesterol, and high blood pressure. It improves digestion and blood sugar levels.
- Packed with protein, fibre, essential vitamins and minerals it is a boon for our bones, heart and cell regeneration.
- Same oats are also a powerhouse of nutrition and a superfood which keeps us full for a longer time and is good for the weight loss process.
- They are rich in antioxidants, promote healthy gut bacteria and manage blood sugar levels.

Step by step preparation of oats jowar sweet pancake
1.In a bowl, add jowar flour, oats flour, coconut powder, almond meal, flaxseeds powder, jaggery powder, cardamom powder, baking powder, pinch of salt, and mix well.
2. Add half of the milk at a time and mix. Now add rest of the mix and mix again. If the mixture is very thick add warm water 2-3 tbsp and mix. Batter should be of medium thick pouring consistency.
3. To make this batter I totally used 1 & 1/4 cup milk and 1/3 cup of water.
4. Now heat an iron griddle on low medium flame and lightly grease it with oil.
5. Pour a big ladle full of batter on the griddle, do not spread.
6. Cook for 30-40 seconds and then flip it. Now cook the other side for 30-40 seconds.
7. Cook the pancake on both sides untill golden brown. Once cooked from both sides transfer the pancake to a plate.
8. Make rest of the pancakes in the similar manner.
9. Garnish with banana pieces and pour some maple syrup on it. ENJOY!
Serving suggestions
These gluten-free pancake are best served at breakfast time or at snack time.
Tips and tricks
- Use warm milk and water to make the batter of pancake.
- To make it vegan try it with non dairy milk like soya milk, almond milk or coconut milk.
- Don’t leave the batter for long time once it is prepared.
- You can add any of your favourite topping.
- For best taste serve them warm, If they become cool, warm them for few seconds in the microwave and serve.
- For a quick preparation, You can also make a premix of the pancake and store it in an airtight container for 1-2 months. Add oil, milk and water at the time of preparation.
