Navratri festival has started, it is a festival of nine days. Most devotees keep fast for the whole nine days to get the blessing from the goddess Durga. Samak rice is one of them as they are nutritious as well as keeps the energy level high. They are not rice but a healthy seed that usually grow with rice paddy and so, got the false name rice. It is a healthy replacement for rice during traditional fasting when rice eating is prohibited.

Vrat kheer made with Samak rice is very easy to make, boil the milk and then add washed Samak rice in it and cook for few minutes and at last addition of sugar, dry fruits, and roasted seeds to make it more yummy, nutritious, and satisfying. It has a sweet and creamy texture that is enjoyed by both kids as well as adults. Not only the festive season also a great choice as a light meal.
Samak or Samo Rice kheer tastes best both as warm or cold. My family likes a little thick consistency of this kheer so, I kept it thick, but you can easily change its consistency to thin by adding some more milk. It also becomes thick after cooling down. Step by step preparation of vrat kheer made with samak rice with pictures
Roasting of seeds
1. In a frying pan add 1/2 tsp ghee, add 1 tbsp pumpkin seeds, 1 tbsp watermelon seeds, and 1 tbsp sesame seeds. lightly roast them for a minutes and then switch off the flame. Keep aside.
How to cook samak rice heer
2. In a heavy bottom saucepan, add 300 ml milk, start boiling. Once it starts boiling, add washed barnyard seeds or sama rice in it and mix well.
3. Now cover the pan and cook it for 2-3 minutes. After 3 minutes, stir it once and then add soaked black currants, sugar, cardamom powder, and almond meal in it. Give a mix and cook it for another 2-3 minutes.
4. After that check the kheer again, take little Samak rice in between your fingers if you feel them soft and well-cooked switch off the flame and leave it covered for 5 minutes. Lastly, add kewra water and mix it well and serve in the bowl. Garnish with roasted seeds and serve.
