Samak Rice Uttapam for Fast – Ingredients

These ingredients needed to make

Oil — Used for shallow frying Uttapams.

Lauki — Shredded lauki or bottle gourd is used.

Spinach and carrots– finely chopped spinach and carrots are added to give a colourful look to our uttapam.

Coriander leaves— fresh coriander leaves impart a nice aroma to Uttapams making them more tempting.

Green Chilies — add to give the Uttapams a little spicy taste. Sawa Chawal and Sabudana Vrat Uttapam are easily available in your pantry. 

Sawa rice —This is the star ingredient of our savoury Sama and Sabudana rice pancakes or uttapam. 

Sabudana pearls — The key ingredients of this recipe, Sago/ Tapioca pearls provide binding and soft texture to our delicious Vrat Uttapams.

Yoghurt — use sour curd to make them fluffy.

Vrat salt/ rock salt — Sendha Namak or rock salt is used for cooking during fasting as regular salt is restricted.

How to Make Sama Rice Uttapam(Chilla)-Step by Step Preparation

1.First wash sama rice and sabudana and soak them separately for 3-4 hours.

2. After soaking strain extra water and transfer them to a grinder jar,add curd and grind in to make a medium thick paste.

3. Now add chopped spinach, grated lauki, chopped carrot, green chilli, jeera, sendha namak, coriander leaves. Mix well. Add paneer pieces and mix well again.

4. At last add eno and mix again well.

5. Heat an iron griddle on medium flame. Once heat lower the flame to low setting. Grease it with few drops of ghee. Sprinkle some sesame seeds.

6. Pour a big ladle ful of batter. Sprinkle a few drops of oil around it.

7. Cover and cook it for 2-3 minutes on a low flame. Then flip to other side and cook for another 2-3 minutes or till done.

8. Delicious samak ke chawal ka chilla is ready to serve.

9. Enjoy this delicious samak rice chilla or uttapam with falahari coconut chutney and curd.

Serve this instant samak rice chilla with coconut chutney and curd on side at Lunch or Dinner time. You can also prepare it on non fasting day too for a change.

Tips and Tricks

  1. Make a thick paste of samak rice and sabudana, don’t add any water while grinding.
  2. Cook uttapam on low flame so that it can cooked well from inside too.
  3. I have used lauki and spinach here but you can add other vegetables which you can eat during fasting.
  4. They taste best when served warm with coconut chutney or coriander chutney and curd on the side. If reheating required microwave it for 20- 30 seconds or cook on tawa with lowest setting of flame.
  5. This much of quantity serves 2. Increase or decrease the quantity of recipe according to your requirement.

  • cup sama rice 60gm
  • 2 tbsp sabudana
