About Apple pie
Apple crumble pie is a simple and delicious dessert that you can enjoy only when apples are in season. Apple pie is one of my favorites and I love apple crisp too. So, If we combine these two we will get apple crumble pie.
As most of us find it difficult to make the crust of the pie at home. It needs some expertise and practice. But in this recipe, I shared a very easy crust recipe and you don’t worry about rolling and cutting the crust sheet.
How to make a perfect crispy crust of a pie?
First, blind-bake the crust for 10 minutes and then 20 minutes after adding filling to it. You can directly add the filling to the crust and bake only once but sometimes the base of the crust becomes slightly soggy with the moisture present in the filling. So, I prefer to bake it first blindly for a few minutes and then with filling. It gives crisper crust base to the apple pie.

- This apple crumble pie is made in three parts. First, the crust second, the apple filling and the last is top crumble. We have to make each part separately and then combine them at the last.
Which apples are perfect for making apple pie at home
In the making of crust, I prefer to add butter as it gives a buttery flavour and crumbly texture. For the apple filling use firm apple so that while cooking they don’t become very soft and lose their shape. You can use any of these apples for making filling-Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Honey Crisp, etc or any apples which are easily available but sweet.
Apple Crumble Pie is a delicious and easy pie that everyone requests again and again. This is the simplest pie recipe with a flaky crust and sweet cinnamon-flavoured apple filling with a crunchy top crumble. It is a perfect after-meal warm dessert for a cozy winter night.
Ingredients required to make apple crumble pie
For crust
Flour– used whole wheat flour for making the base of the pie. Also added coarse almond powder which gives it a crunchy texture.
Butter– homemade fresh unsalted butter is used. If you used salted butter skip the salt from the recipe. For a vegan version can use coconut oil or any other refined oil.
Milk– chilled milk is used to bind the crust but you can also use chilled water instead if you making it vegan.
Apple filling
Apples– I have used apple which is mostly found in the Indian market. You can use any of these varieties which are easily available to you-Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Honey Crisp, McIntosh, Ambri, etc.
Jaggery powder- gives a dark colour and a nice caramel taste to the apples. You can also add jaggery, brown sugar, desi khand, or coconut sugar etc.
Cinnamon– it goes well with apples and enhances their taste and flavour.
Cornflour – add thickness to the filling so that it does not make the crust soggy while baking.

How to store baked homemade apple pie?
Once the pie is baked, cool it completely. You can store it at room temperature for up to 24 hours. Or in the refrigerator 2 to 3 days. You can also freeze pie before or after baking. If frozen before baking, pie should be baked in an preheated oven at 375 degrees Celsius for 30-35 minutes.
If you baked this apple crumb pie before head, for the best taste you can warm it in the oven again before serving. Preheat the oven at 160 degrees Celsius and heat the pie for 15-20 minutes.
Step by step preparation of apple pie with crumble topping
For making pie filling
1.First, wash, peel and chop apple into small piece. Now transfer them to a pan and put it on a low flame.
2. Add jaggery powder, white sugar, cinnamon powder,lemon juice and mix well altogether.
3. Cover the pan, and cook it for 3-4 minutes or till apple becomes slightly soft. They should not be mushy. Stir in between for even cooking and to avoid sticking at the bottom.
4.In a bowl, mix corn flour into water and keep aside till required.
5. Once the apples become slightly soft, add corn flour mixture to it. Now stir it continuously and cook further 1-2 minutes or till the mixture starts thickens.
6. Switch off the flame and let it cool completely.
Making of pie base or crust
1.In a mixing bowl add whole wheat flour, icing sugar, almond powder, salt, and vinegar. Mix them once and now add chilled butter cubes.
2. Mix gently butter with the dry mixture till all the butter is melts with flour and the mixture becomes like a bread crumbs consistency.
3. Now add 1- 2 tbsp chilled milk to bind the dough, don’t knead it.
4. Take a pie pan with removable bottom and spread the mixture evenly on the bottom and sides.
5. Lightly press with hands so that it will stick nicely. Use a spatula or a flat bottom bowl to even out the base.
6. Now cover it with a plastic wrap and refrigerate it for at least 30-40 minutes.
Making of crumble topping
1.In a bowl, add whole wheat flour, almond powder, brown sugar and chilled butter. Mix them gently with hand till it becomes a bread crumbs like consistency. Cover it and refrigerate till needed.
Blind Baking of pie crust
- Meanwhile preheat oven at 180 degrees Celsius for about 10-15 minutes.
- Once the pie base is chilled, remove it from the refrigerator, prick the bottom and sides with the help of a fork and place it in the preheated oven.
- Bake it for 10-12 minutes and then take it out from the oven. Let it cool completely.
Assembling of pie and final baking
1.Once the crust and pie filling is cooled completely. Pour filling over the base, spread it evenly.
2. Cover it with the crumble topping mixture.
3. Place the pie pan in the preheated oven and bake it for 20-25 minutes or till the sides and top crumbs becomes golden in colour.
4. Take out from the oven and cool it for 5-10 minutes.
5. Cut into pieces and serve warm. ENJOY !
Serving suggestions
You can serve this delicious apple pie as a dessert after a hearty main meal. Its tastes best when you serve it warm. Add a scoop of vanilla or caramel ice cream enhances its taste.
Tips and tricks
- Use firm apples so they don’t become mushy after cooking.
- Add coarse almond meal to the crust and top crumble to get crunchy bites.
- While making the crust base don’t knead the mixture just combine lightly otherwise it makes the crust hard.
- Use a tart or pie pan so that it is easy to remove the pie after baking.
- You can bake the pie in one go or for a crispier base first blind bake the crust and then with the filling part.
- For a stronger flavour, you can also add a little cinnamon powder to the crust part.
