What is Paratha?

Paratha is an Indian flat bread that is either made plain or with stuffing and then shallow fried on an griddle. It is very popular in south Asian countries. Parathas are mainly made with whole wheat flour dough and stuffed with veggies and spices. Aloo paratha, methi paratha, palak paratha, gobhi paratha, mooli paratha are some famous paratha recipes that is prepared at breakfast or for a quick lunch.

Parathas, mainly with stuffing, are very popular in Punjab state. They use a lot of fat to fry them which makes the paratha very delicious as well as rich in calories.

About Stuffed Matar ka Paratha Recipe

We can prepare this green peas paratha in many variations. But here, in this post, I am sharing a very simple and easy way to make a perfect stuffed green peas paratha recipe. The use of spices is minimal so that we can enjoy the full taste and flavour of green peas.

In winter, fresh peas are easily available so, winters are the perfect time to enjoy these very yummy matar ka paratha. But even if you want them at other times of the year, you can use frozen peas instead.

Green peas are alkaline in nature and good for digestion. Also, avoid using too much oil for shallow frying parathas. High fat is heavy on the stomach and will cause acidity problems.

Hari matar are rich in soluble fibre and give a feeling of satiety. Prefer to serve these parathas at breakfast or lunchtime when the metabolism is fast.

Making these green peas parathas is so easy. There will be no fear of coming out of filling from parathas as I have made this stuffed paratha with a different approach. It is a beginner’s friendly recipe for making stuffed paratha.

Green Peas Paratha Recipe Ingredients

Peas– I have used fresh peas here. If the fresh peas is not available, use frozen instead.

Flour– whole wheat flour is used to make these yummy wholesome stuffed parathas. You can also use multigrain flour or use 2 or 3 flour together to make these paratha recipe.

Spices– salt, turmeric,coriander powder, roasted cumin seeds powder, amchoor, ginger powder, black pepper powder

Green chillies– if you like spiciness in parathas add chillies otherwise skip them.

Potato– Boil potato and grate it then add to the stuffing. It will not only helps in binding the stuffing together but also adds softness to parathas.

Sattu or Roasted besan– for giving a binding to the stuffing, I have used chana sattu here. If chana sattu is not handy, then roast same amount of besan and add to the filling.

Onion and garlic– I have added onion and garlic while preparing filling but if you don’t like them can skip it.

How to Make Hare Matar ka Paratha-Step by Step Preparation

Preparation of stuffing

1.Put a frying pan on low medium Flame. Heat 1 tbsp oil in it then add chopped onion, garlic and green chillies and sauté them for 2-3 minutes till they become slightly crispy.

2. Add coriander powder, cumin seeds powder, turmeric powder, ginger powder, black pepper powder, amchoor powder, and salt. Mix well.

3. Add peas and mix well again. Cover the pan and cook it for 7-8 minutes till the peas becomes slightly soft.

4. At that stage mash them roughly with the help of a potato masher. Switch off the flame and let it cool .

5. Once it cool down, add grated boiled potatoes and sattu powder, mix well. Green peas stuffing for paratha is ready.

Preparation of dough

1. Now in a big vessel add whole wheat flour, salt, and oil. Mix well and add water gradually to make a soft dough. Dough should not be stiff and very soft. Cover it and leave aside for 5-10 minutes.

2. Divide the dough into equal size balls. Take a ball and roll it into a 5-6 inch circle, put it aside. Take another ball and also roll it into a 5-6 inch circle. Now add 2-3 tbsp stuffing and spread it evenly. Cover this circle with another circle we made and join the corners.

4. Now roll it into 6-7 inch circle and then transfer to the medium hot tawa or griddle. Cook it for few seconds and flip to other side.

5. Cook for few seconds from other side and then flip it again. Apply oil on both sides. Cook till both the side becomes crispy and well cooked. Transfer to a plate. Serve warm these delicious hare matar ka paratha with pickle and curd.

6. Repeat the same procedure with other balls and make all the parathas. For best taste serve them warm.

Serving Suggestions

Serve these green peas paratha with homemade butter, curd or raita and pickles on the side. You can enjoy them at breakfast or lunch. It is a great option to pack in the tiffin box for kids.

  1. Instead of whole wheat flour, you can also try this paratha with multigrain flour.
  2. Don’t boil peas as it will make them very soft and mushy and will be difficult to make parathas.
  3. You can also made stuffing ahead and refrigerate it till needed. It makes the job faster while making these paratha for breakfast time.
  4. For the best taste, serve them warm.
  5. Onion and garlic can also be skipped as per your choice.

For making dough

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tbsp oil + 2-3 tbsp oil for shallow frying parathas
  • Water to knead the dough
