Vegetable Momos With Wheat Flour

Vegetable momos – are steamed dumpling made with wheat flour sheets filled with a mixture of cabbage, onion, carrot and green capsicum. A healthy, low-fat snack recipe that is served with a spicy red chilli sauce called momo’ chutney.

What are momos?

Momos are simple plain flour dumplings filled with mixed vegetables, or meat and then steamed for few minutes. It is a very famous street food inherited from Nepali cuisine and later introduced to other countries Tibet, China and Japan. Momos are mostly served as a snack in the evening time.
Momos can be steamed, deep-fried or even baked. They mainly contain the savoury filling and the good thing is that the filling can be customised according to your taste. The filling of momos is mildly spiced so that it goes well with a spicy red chilli chutney.

About vegetable momos with wheat flour

Today, I am sharing with you a healthy version of momos using wheat flour for making momos sheet. We will cover here everything from momos sheet to momos chutney. This recipe is vegan and low in fat so diabetic-friendly too. It is also nut-free recipe.

I have used a filling of mixed veggies cabbage, carrot, onion, and green capsicum. You can also add other vegetables like green beans, sweet corn, sprouts, mushroom, or even paneer or tofu according to your taste. Finely chop these vegetables or shred them with the help of a food processor.

Vegetable momos are easy to prepare at home, just follow the instruction and watch the video for more clarity. There are different ways of shaping momos. Here, I will show you the easiest way of making momos. I also prefer to steam my momos instead of deep-frying. Although deep-fried momos have a rich flavour and crunchy taste, steamed momos are delicious too.

Step by step instructions of making veg momos without maida

For making momo’s chutney

1.Mark cuts on one side of the tomatoes and place them in a bowl filled with ¼ cup of water. Add onion pieces, garlic and whole red chillies. Microwave them for 2-3 minutes on high flame.

2.Let it cool and then remove the skin of the tomatoes. Now transfer all the ingredients to a grinder jar. Grind it to make a fine paste. Strain it and keep it aside.

3.Heat 1 tsp oil in a pan. Add the strained mixture, salt, sugar, soya sauce and vinegar to it. Cook it till it becomes slightly thick in consistency. Keep it aside.

Making fillings for momos

4. Heat oil in a pan. Add finely chopped ginger, garlic, and green chillies paste. Sauté it for few seconds till the raw smell is gone.

5.Add chopped onion and sauté it for 2-3 minutes till it becomes translucent. Now add shredded cabbage, finely chopped green capsicum and grated carrots to it. Cook it for 1-2 minutes till it becomes slightly dry.

6.Then add salt and 1 tbsp momos sauce in it and cook further till it water completely dry but still moist. Let it cool completely.

Making of dough

7.Take whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour and salt in a bowl and add water to make a medium soft dough. Cover it and keep it aside for 5 minutes. 

8.After 5 minutes, knead the dough for 1-2 minutes till it becomes smooth. Now make very small size balls out of it.

9.Take a ball and roll it into a 3-4 inch circle. Add 2 tsp filling at the centre and close the ends to bring the corner towards the centre. Repeat the process and make all the momos. Get the steamer ready.

10.Arrange the momos on a greased plate and place them in the hot steamer. Steam them for about 12-13 minutes and then check.

11.Touch the momos if they feel non-sticky means they are done. Transfer them to a plate and let them a cool little bit. 

12.Repeat the process with the rest of the momos and get steamed all the momos. Serve them warm with momos chutney.

Serve warm these veg momos with spicy red chilli sauce in the evening. You can also serve them as a starter or appetizer on special occasions like birthday parties, get togethers, family lunches etc.

  1. Momos filling should be dry but moist in texture. That helps in filling momos nicely without any leakage or breaking of momo covering.
  2. Dough should be little tighter than the chapatti dough. Knead the dough nicely before making momos sheet.
  3. You can add filling according to your choice.

Ingredients
  

Momo chutney

  • 2 Tomato
  • 3-4 garlic clove
  • 2 red chilli whole
  • ½ onion
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 tsp oil
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp soya sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato sauce
  • 1 tsp vinegar

Momo filling

  • 2 tsp oil
  • 2 green chilli
  • 1 tsp garlic ginger paste
  • 1 medium size onion
  • ½ cup shimla mirch finely chopped
  • ½ cup carrots grated finely chopped
  • 3 cup cabbage finely chopped
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp momo sauce

For dough

  • 150 gm whole wheat flour
  • 25 gm all purpose flour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Water to knead the dough

Instructions
